Community Guidelines
Part of the Checked In Terms and Conditions.
Last updated: 8 October 2026
Checked In works because the recommendations are real and the people are decent. "We know a place" only means something if you can trust who's saying it. These guidelines apply everywhere in Checked In: Where To recommendations, reviews, the Right Now / Noticeboard, The Lounge, private messages, and audio and video calls.
1. Be real
-
Recommend places you've actually been, and say it as you found it.
-
No fake, copied, paid or incentivised reviews, and no reviews swapped for freebies or discounts.
-
If you own, work at or are connected to a business, say so every time you post about it. Owners and staff can't review their own business.
-
Don't post on behalf of a business you're not authorised to represent.
2. Be kind
-
No harassment, bullying, threats, intimidation or hate speech, including attacks based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age.
-
Disagree with a recommendation, not the person. Criticism of a venue is fine; personal abuse of its staff isn't.
-
Respect the places you visit and the people who live there.
3. Respect privacy and location
-
Don't share anyone else's personal information: phone numbers, addresses, accommodation, room numbers, travel plans or documents.
-
Don't use check-ins, presence counts, posts or messages to find, follow, track or turn up on someone who hasn't invited you.
-
Don't post photos or videos of identifiable people in private moments without their permission.
-
Don't screenshot, forward or publish someone's private messages, and never record a call without everyone's consent.
4. Keep it safe and legal
-
Nothing illegal where you are or where the content is about, including selling drugs, weapons or counterfeit goods.
-
No sexually explicit content, and no unsolicited sexual messages, images or calls.
-
Zero tolerance for any content that sexualises, exploits or endangers children. We report it to authorities.
-
Don't encourage dangerous activities, such as trespassing, ignoring safety closures or unsafe challenges.
-
No scams, phishing or requests for money, gift cards, crypto or bank details.
5. No spam or hidden promotion
-
No advertising without our written consent. Don't promote or sell products or services, post affiliate or referral links for commercial gain, or solicit users for business anywhere in Checked In, including posts, your profile and private messages. Unauthorised advertising will be removed, and accounts that post it may be suspended or permanently removed.
-
No repetitive posts, chain messages, or unsolicited sales pitches in The Lounge or private messages.
-
Businesses that want to reach travellers can advertise with us. Every paid placement is labelled "Sponsored" and kept separate from editorial picks. Email info@checkedin-app.com to find out more.
6. Respect creators
-
Only post photos, videos and text you created or have permission to use.
-
Credit other people's tips when you share them.
7. Messages and calls
-
Treat private messages and calls like any conversation with someone you've just met. If someone asks you to stop, stop.
-
Don't move someone onto other apps or ask for personal details before they're comfortable.
-
Messages are end-to-end encrypted, so we can't see them. If something goes wrong, report the user and choose to share the messages with us so we can act.
8. Meeting other travellers
Meeting people is one of the best parts of travel. Checked In doesn't organise or supervise meet-ups and doesn't run background checks on users, so read our Safety Tips before you meet anyone.
9. You must be 18 or over
Checked In is for adults only. If you think someone is under 18, please report them.
Reporting and what we do
-
Report any post, profile, message or user by emailing info@checkedin-app.com. In-app report and block tools are coming soon.
-
Block anyone you don't want to hear from once in-app blocking is available. They won't be told.
-
People, not automated tools, review reports. Depending on how serious it is and whether it has happened before, we may remove content, warn you, limit features, suspend your account, or close it permanently. Serious threats, child safety issues and other crimes may be reported to police.
-
We'll tell you what we did and why, unless doing so would put someone at risk. If you think we got it wrong, email support@checkedin-app.com within 30 days to ask for a review.
If you're in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (000 in Australia, 112 in the EU, 911 in the US). Checked In cannot contact emergency services for you.
