Aliki, Paros — the Greek island town that hasn't heard of you
Skip Naoussa's queues for Aliki, Paros: a quiet fishing village with harbourside fish tavernas, calm swimming and long Greek lunches. We know a place.
Everyone gets off the ferry at Parikia and turns left for Naoussa. Turn right instead.
There's a version of Greece everyone posts and a version everyone actually dreams about. Naoussa is the first one now — beautiful, but you're queueing for it. Aliki, twenty minutes south on the same island, is the second: a small fishing village wrapped around a shallow bay, where the tavernas sit close enough to the water that an ambitious wave could season your fries.
Here's the thing about Aliki: nothing happens there. That's the entire product. You wake up, you swim before breakfast because the beach is forty metres away and flat as a pool. You have a coffee that takes forty-five minutes because the man making it is also talking to a fisherman about the wind. You read. You swim again. At some point it becomes lunch o'clock and you walk — everything is a walk, nowhere is a drive — to a table by the harbour.
Eat at the fish tavernas on the front, where the octopus is hanging out to dry like laundry and the catch listed is the catch caught. Order whatever came in that morning, a horiatiki, cold white wine from up the hill, and don't look at your phone. The bill will be less than a cocktail in Naoussa and you'll think about the meal for a year.
The beach itself is small, sandy, family-calm — tamarisk trees for shade, water so clear it looks retouched. If you want drama, Faragas and its swimming-pool coves are ten minutes away. If you want nightlife, that's the neck of the island — go, have fun, come back to the quiet. Aliki works precisely because it lets Naoussa be Naoussa.
Stay in a small guesthouse near the harbour, not a resort — there aren't any resorts, which is the point. September is the cheat code: the water's at its warmest, the crowds have flown home, and sunset over the bay goes on forever with an audience of about eleven people.
Paros gets called "the balanced island" — Mykonos energy available, Cycladic calm standard. Aliki is where the balance tips all the way to calm. Get there before the algorithm does.
How we'd spend a day: swim before breakfast, fish on the harbour, wine at sunset. We know a place.
