New York doesn't need you to plan. It needs you to walk.

The city rewards stamina, not itineraries.

Every first-timer makes the same mistake in New York: they build an itinerary. Times Square, Empire State, a musical, a checklist. New York is not a checklist city. It is a walking city, maybe the walking city, and the whole point is what happens between the landmarks.

So: pick a neighbourhood per day, not a list of sights. One day downtown — start with a bacon-egg-and-cheese from any deli that looks busy, walk the West Village while it's quiet, cross into Soho, end up in Chinatown for hand-pulled noodles. One day in Brooklyn — walk the bridge early (before 9am or it's a photoshoot), then Dumbo, then keep going into Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy where the brownstones are. One day uptown for the Met — go straight to whatever wing you actually care about, one hour maximum, then walk Central Park's north end, which the tourists never reach.

Eat one proper bagel (order it with lox, eat it standing up). Eat one dollar-ish slice folded in half. Book exactly one real dinner — the city's mid-range is the best on earth, and a Tuesday-night table at a neighbourhood spot beats a famous one you queued for.

The skyline moment: not the Empire State. Take the Staten Island Ferry at golden hour. It's , it runs constantly, and it gives you the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan doing their full routine.

The final rule: wear real shoes. New York will convince you that somewhere is “just a few blocks away,” and suddenly you’ve walked 24,000 steps, eaten three dinners and ended up in a bar you could never find again. That is the itinerary. Checked In Quick Picks

Stay: The Ludlow, Lower East Side. Perfect downtown energy.

Eat & Drink: Pastis, Meatpacking District. An iconic French bistro made for long lunches and people-watching.

Do: Explore Brooklyn. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, wander DUMBO and finish in Brooklyn Heights.

Move: Bike through Central Park. The best way to see it without losing half your day.

Shop: SoHo. Designer flagships, cool boutiques and everything in between.

Neighbourhoods: West Village for brownstones, restaurants and romantic streets. The New York City you see in the movies.
